Computer Adapter

Electrical problem with computer adapter plug in. How do you fix?

Our Fujitsu laptop began running on battery power even with the ac adapter plugged in until the power ran out. We bought a new adapter and that did not work either. Batteries are dead but otherwise functional.

Are you sure the new AC adapter is good? The correct voltage and amperage for this laptop? If so then the AC power jack is bad. Sometimes the socket of the power jack becomes distorted, making a poor fit. A simple description of the power jack's socket, is an outside metal cylinder, and a metal post on the inside, of the cylinder. Sometimes the post is bent, or sometimes as stated, the outside cylinder is expanded,(distorted), and/or both. Most of the time, the power jack's soldered connections to the motherboard, have come loose. It may just be from the normal wear and tear of usage, or may have accidentally been bumped a few times. Fix it? Can be done. I'm working on this very same problem with a HP Pavilion ze1000 series laptop. You have to disassemble the laptop, all the way down to just the motherboard. Then buy a new AC power jack, un-install the old one, and solder in the new one. Do I recommend this? If it's still under warranty, definitely not! If you feel you have the skill, and can know how to solder well, you may want to try it. I'm not responsible should you ruin your laptop, so the decision is yours. You'll need an ESD wriststrap, pencil point soldering iron, soldering iron stand with sponge, rosin core solder, desoldering tool, preferably the laptop Service & Maintenance Manual for this laptop, (or the series of this laptop ), pair of diagonal side cutters, plus a new AC power jack. (Plus patience! lol!) I found my new AC power jack on Ebay for $5.75.
Generic information on replacing a AC power jack. I haven't found any Service and Maintenance Manuals, for Fujitsu laptops yet.

2.http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-M105/take-apart-notebook-1.htm (How to take a Toshiba Satellite M105 apart. Generic knowledge that may apply to your Fujitsu) I suggest clicking on the blue, "A few things to know before you start taking your laptop apart", then peruse this page. This is Page 1. The Page links to the rest of the info, are on the bottom of this page.
3.Another one. Toshiba Satellite P205 this time. http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-p205/removing-motherboard-1.htm You'll notice that the info is very similar to the above laptop. After you have taken apart a few different models of laptops, you'll notice the basic procedure is the same for all.

One thing. DO NOT work directly on a carpet floor like this guy! I think he did it for clarity purposes. Work on a static free environment, like up on a table. USE an ESD wriststrap.Don't know which country you're in, but Radioshack has them for around $8 to $10 bucks. You can find them online also. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antistatic_wrist_strap ) Part 1 Takes a coupla' seconds to start.
