What does the Charge controller do in a wind power system?
I built a wind generator using a 180v 8 amp 1725 rpm pmdc motor where I have been able to achieve anywhere from 30 vdc to 120vdc unloaded depending on which rotor I am using.
the problem is when I am connected to the batteries I can never go over 13.3 volts which will only charge my batteries to 12.3 volts. So my problem is that I can't even fully charge my batteries much less over charge them. Will a charge Controller allow me to set the input voltage to 14.2 volts or is there something else I can do to raise the voltage to be able to fully charge batteries. When the system is all completed I will have a charge Controller but right now I'm still trying to work the system out. Am I doing something wrong that is not allowing me to reach the required voltage? On paper this should be a really good generator right? Thanks!
A good charge controller includes a DC-Dc converter which changes your output voltage to that best suitable for charging the battery. It's second purpose is to control the current to the battery to avoid overcharging it.
But you may not need the DC-Dc converter part, as a battery will never allow the input voltage to go over 14 volts or so without blowing up. In other words, the battery acts as a regulator when you apply more than 14 volts, and draws current to keep the voltage at that level. Of course if you have a lot of current available, that may overcharge the battery.
So you should be able to fully charge the battery if you can deliver 30 volts, unless the current is very low.
You can check this with an ammeter in series between the generator and battery to measure the charge current. You need that anyway to avoid overcharging. If you don't have a 10 amp or so ammeter, you can get a 0.1 ohm resistor and measure the voltage across that as a current meter.
